The claws still launch Tuesday. This one does not.
Bloomberg, Jason Schreier, Sept. 11: Sony’s PlayStation pulled out of Hideo Kojima’s next stealth game, Physint, over budget, potential profitability, and exclusivity, people familiar with the project said. One factor: Death Stranding and Death Stranding 2: On the Beach did not meet PlayStation’s revenue expectations. PlayStation had already posted that it was stepping away. Kojima said the studio got a cancel notice in mid-June and spent three months looking.
Gematsu, 10:06 a.m. ET, citing the same report: Physint missed deadlines and was on track to be “well over budget” even though it is years from release. Sony was reluctant to put “hundreds of millions of dollars” into another title that would not stay exclusive on its hardware. Xbox is taking publishing and plans Xbox and PC. An Xbox spokesperson: “Betting on Kojima-san is an easy call.” CEO Asha Sharma called it a big moment for Xbox. No release date. No confirmed exclusivity window beyond that Xbox-and-PC plan.
This is not Marvel’s Wolverine. That embargo is already on the site: Metacritic 78, launch Sept. 15, $69.99. Physint is a different SKU and a different clock.
What this means for you
If you have a PlayStation, this one is no longer their problem. If you have an Xbox or a PC, you have a promise, not a street date. If you needed a 78, that was Logan.
Bottom line: Sony walked. Xbox signed. Physint has no date. We will not invent one.
