Justice Department, Sept. 11: Zakia Khan, 55, of Brooklyn, was sentenced to 76 months in prison for leading a Medicaid fraud and illegal-kickback scheme at two social adult daycare centers β Happy Family and Family Social β plus a home-health fiscal intermediary, Responsible Care Staffing, and a proceeds entity, Tanwee Services. Eastern District of New York. She pleaded guilty in August 2025 to conspiracy to commit health-care fraud and conspiracy to defraud the United States and pay kickbacks.
Prosecutors: from about October 2017 through July 2024, marketers referred Medicaid recipients in exchange for kickbacks. Recipients were paid to sign up for services that were not provided as billed. The two centers fraudulently billed about $64 million. Medicaid paid about $56 million. The court ordered more than $56 million in restitution and $5 million forfeited β two properties, cash, and gold jewelry from a home search. HHS-OIG, HSI New York, and NYPD investigated.
