Xinhua, Sanaa, dateline Sept. 28, posted 05:04:30 UTC Sept. 29: two military sources from the opposing sides described Monday’s fighting in Al-Madaribah wa Ras Al-Arah district, southern Lahj, a rugged area overlooking approaches to Bab al-Mandab. A government military official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Houthis launched an offensive early Monday, initially captured several positions after hours of fighting, then government forces brought reinforcements and counterattacked. “We managed to push them back from the positions they had seized,” the official said, adding that 28 Houthi fighters were killed and several wounded. He said warplanes struck Houthi positions, gatherings, and vehicles without identifying the aircraft. That is his line.
Same Xinhua file: a Houthi military source, also anonymous, said Houthi fighters killed 16 government soldiers and wounded several others. “We advanced despite the heavy airstrikes,” the source said, insisting the group remained in positions captured earlier in the day. Those two sentences do not agree on who holds the ridge. Xinhua’s hed added the two kill claims into “at least 44.” That is arithmetic on opposing claims, not a tally we weighed.
