WSB-TV / Channel 2, Atlanta, Sept. 13, 10:49 a.m. ET: Bogdan Alexandru Gherghevici, 27, a Romanian national, was arrested Sept. 4 near Seattle after more than a year as a fugitive. A federal grand jury in August 2025 indicted him on 16 counts, including wire fraud and aggravated identity theft. Prosecutors allege that between March and May 2025, he and a co-defendant defrauded more than a dozen prospective buyers โ many of them elderly โ with losses exceeding $600,000. The pitch: farm equipment that never showed. Western District of Washington Magistrate Judge Brian A. Tsuchida ordered him extradited to the Southern District of Georgia.
The other man already has a number. Viorel Cristea, 33, pleaded guilty to one count of wire fraud and was sentenced in March 2026 by Chief Judge R. Stan Baker to 21 months, $679,100 in restitution, and deportation after the term. That is Cristeaโs sentence. It is not Ghergheviciโs.
U.S. Attorney Margaret E. โMegโ Heap (S.D. Ga.): the case now goes back for trial. HSI Special Agent in Charge Steven N. Schrank: fleeing does not erase the alleged harm. This is an indictment. Charges are not convictions.
