The last number we trusted was 9,000. The new one is two-thirds.
Honolulu Star-Advertiser, Sept. 11, citing KauaΚ»i Island Utility Cooperative: about 66% of KIUC customers have power, up from 32% in the prior utility report. More than 12,000 additional customers in 24 hours in parts of Anahola, Kapaa, Wailua, Lihue, and Poipu. Kauai Veterans Memorial Hospital, Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital, and Wilcox Medical Center are energized β three, not the two we had at midday Thursday. About 90% of accounts, roughly 33,000, lost power at some point. 63% of major transmission lines are repaired, per Hawaii News Nowβs KIUC recap.
North shore: no restoration estimate. KIUC plans 10 crews there. Nearly 100 mutual-aid personnel from Hawaiian Electric, Southern California Edison, and HMS Construction. State DOE: power at 9 of 15 public school campuses; Kilauea and Hanalei elementary still without power, with a Monday call still being made. Most public schools aimed at Monday.
Gov. Josh Green asked the White House for federal help for Kauai and Maui counties. He has said, at this early stage, Lowell looks worse than Iniki (1992) β that is his letter, before a full damage tab. We will not invent a dollar figure the state has not filed.
What this means for you
If you are on Kauai and the lights are on, 66% is not the north shore. If you run a generator, keep it outside. If the week is too heavy, 988.
Bottom line: 66%, up from 32%. Three hospitals. No north-shore date. Not another hurricane warning.
