Monday is the picnic. November 3 is the exam.
Labor Day is the traditional kick for the last 60-some days of a midterm. Forecasters are already treating the House as a Democratic lean and the Senate as a knife fight. Democrats need a net four Senate seats. Cook’s toss-ups have included Alaska, Iowa, Maine, Ohio, Texas, and Democratic-held Michigan. Republicans are defending 16 of 21 House toss-ups.
Reuters/Ipsos had Donald Trump at 33% approval for a third straight survey, through August 31. Democratic enthusiasm 46%, Republican 31%. Independents preferred Democrats on the congressional ballot 36–22. Other generic ballots put Democrats up 3 to 8. Harvard-Harris in August was the outlier with a slight GOP edge among likely voters.
Mike Johnson: Republicans will “defy history” and hold the House. Hakeem Jeffries: “Life has gotten far too expensive… and Republicans don’t give a damn about it.” The Democratic pitch is affordability — Iran, tariffs, expired ACA credits, safety-net cuts. Trump wants a midterm convention in Dallas later this month.
The money and the mail
MAGA Inc. still has about $400 million. Musk’s America PAC has started writing — we told you about the Paxton checks. Jon Ossoff and James Talarico are the Democratic fundraising names in the same paragraph. Maps, after a Supreme Court assist, are the other GOP hedge.
North Carolina already sent ballots. Judge Talwani locked the USPS rule. DOJ asked Judge Nichols to let it through anyway.
What this means for you
If you vote, the holiday is the reminder to request the ballot, not the end of the argument. If you watch markets, a House flip is subpoena power and a block on the last two Trump years. If you only read one poll, read turnout, not vibes.
Bottom line: 63 days. An underwater president. A $4.14 gallon. The starting gun is Monday.
