The envoys left. The sirens did not stay home.
Ukraine is contracting about 1,000 missiles for U.S.-designed Patriot batteries, Defence Minister Yevhenii Khmara told the Ukraine Defense Contact Group on Tuesday, Reuters reported. Allies and an EU loan. He also said most of those rounds start shipping in the coming years, which is why Kyiv is asking partners to pull from stockpiles now. Ukraine says it needs 300 Patriot interceptors to get through winter. It also cites a $27 billion hole in drone financing.
Germany: Defence Minister Boris Pistorius said Berlin is “urgently” sending part of its PAC-2 stockpile and asked others to look at their own shelves. PAC-2 bursts shrapnel. PAC-3 is hit-to-kill. “If in doubt, decide in favour for Ukraine.” United Kingdom: £100 million committed to air defense kit that includes Patriot interceptors, plus large-calibre ammo and drones, the Guardian reported. Ursula von der Leyen: Ukraine can put the next €3.2 billion from the EU support loan toward Patriots.
Tuesday in Kyiv: Russia resumed the drone-and-missile rhythm after the brief halt for Witkoff and Kushner. Officials said five people were killed in the capital, and more in other regions. Khmara: no strategic Russian gains on a 1,200-kilometer front; Moscow making up for it with “terror against Ukrainians.” NATO’s Mark Rutte: allies have to boost support so Ukraine can hold the sky.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Guardian: if all sides agree, Russian, Ukrainian, and U.S. negotiators could meet as early as this month. A Kremlin readout of a Tuesday Putin–Trump call — about an hour — had Trump asking for a speedy end and Putin saying Russia has “no aggressive plans” toward Europe. We do not have a matching White House transcript. Scheduling a room is not a ceasefire.
What this means for you
If you wanted the peace-train sequel, Tuesday’s death count is the sequel. If you hold defense names, a 1,000-round contract is a years-long order book, not a 4 p.m. print. If you only read this morning’s tanker story, this is the other war.
Bottom line: 1,000 Patriots on paper. 300 needed this winter. Five dead in Kyiv after the pause. Diplomacy still does not intercept a missile.
