The league opened a calendar argument.
Kyle Shanahan met the press in Melbourne on Monday local time β Sunday evening in California β after the 49ersβ first full practice of game week at AAMI Park. They have been in Australia since Friday. A handful went to an AFL game at the MCG. Christian McCaffrey: cool experience, great coffee, people unbelievable. Shanahan spent a chunk of the podium explaining that his watch says one day and his family is still on yesterday. βToday is just our first day of the game plan, which is a Wednesday.β Then he asked them not to make him do that again.
The injury he would talk about: Sam Okuayinonu. Plate in the foot from an older fix. Bonus practice, the day they left, someone stepped on it, the plate broke. Surgery. Injured reserve. Did not travel. Shanahan: βbad injuryβ¦ hopefully we can get him back later in the year.β Mykel Williams is already on PUP. The club signed Khalid Kareem. Nick Bosa and George Kittle will wait for the first official report β Shanahan declined the usual Monday injury dump because the Rams do not have to speak until they practice in California, which is Tuesday in Melbourne. βWeβre technically in the future.β
The game: 49ers vs. Rams, Melbourne Cricket Ground, Friday, Sept. 11, 10:35 a.m. AEST β Thursday, Sept. 10, 8:35 p.m. ET on Netflix. First regular-season NFL game in Australia. The Rams fly in Thursday. SeattleβNew England is still Wednesday, 8:20 p.m. ET, NBC. That one is the champion. This one is the novelty with a real injury.
What this means for you
If you only have one night, Wednesday is the Super Bowl rematch. If you set an alarm for Australia, it is Thursday night in the States. If you needed an injury, it is Okuayinonu, not a rumor about Bosa.
Bottom line: they practiced in tomorrow. The foot is broken. The kick is Thursday night ET.
