ClickOnDetroit, Erika Erickson, Sunday 5:00 a.m. ET: Laura Whisenant, Detroit, faces federal charges after a Social Security Administration Office of Inspector General complaint filed Sept. 8. SSA determined she misused $121,980 of her uncle’s benefits from January 2017 through June 2023. She was arrested and released on a $10,000 unsecured bond. Preliminary hearing: Oct. 1, 2026, 1 p.m. A complaint is an accusation. All defendants are presumed innocent.
Investigators: the uncle has mental impairments and could not manage his own money. Benefits were about $1,500 to $1,800 a month. Huntington National Bank records, March 2017 through May 2024: $118,842 in monthly Social Security deposits plus three IRS COVID payments totaling $3,200. Debits allegedly included more than 150 withdrawals totaling about $50,000, more than $33,000 in credit-card payments, nail salons, a massage parlor, fast food, liquor stores, and a Las Vegas nightclub. Unrelated spending in a press account is still alleged until a plea or a verdict.
Adult Protective Services removed him in 2023 from a Detroit house Whisenant allegedly knew had no running water or electricity, heat from a wood-burning fireplace. APS: “deplorable living conditions that were not suitable for human habitation.” She told investigators in May 2024 she became payee in 2013 after her father died, acknowledged the utilities were off, and said she used the money for him but provided no documentation. No paperwork is not a verdict.
