Elon Musk stopped waiting.
His America PAC disclosed about $840,000 Thursday for 15 House and Senate candidates. Nearly $250,000 of that — the biggest slice — backed Ken Paxton. Friday night the group reported another $2.9 million on midterms, almost half aimed at Texas. Early money is printing and mail, plus registration ads that tell Texans their state “could flip control of the Senate.”
James Talarico, the Democrat, had been beating Paxton on TV. AdImpact: GOP outside groups, led by Lone Star Liberty PAC, are spending about $11 million on ads this week versus about $4 million from Talarico. August was the other way around — Democrats $13.3 million, Republicans $4.7 million.
Why Musk, why now
Musk moved Tesla and SpaceX gravity to Texas. He told Greg Abbott in July he loves the business climate. He has given $3 million to Texans for Lawsuit Reform, $2 million to a GOP judicial PAC, and six figures each to Abbott, Dan Patrick, and Speaker Dustin Burrows. His lawyer Chris Gober is on track for a House seat.
Paxton, as AG, investigated ad boycotts on X after Musk sued advertisers. They have also fought in court over Starbase open-records. America PAC spokesman Andrew Romeo said the only priority is Republican control of Washington.
Ted Cruz on Fox Saturday: Republicans are “massively outspent,” his super PAC has put $2 million+ behind Paxton, “we need to step up.” John Thune wants Trump to send some of MAGA Inc.’s ~$400 million. Trump said Friday he will help “good Republicans” who can win.
Paxton was impeached by the Texas House in 2023 and acquitted by the Senate. He beat John Cornyn with Trump’s endorsement. Democrats need a net four seats.
Musk spent nearly $300 million in 2024, then a Wisconsin Supreme Court flop, then a break with Trump, then a reunion. Democrats will try to make him the issue. They already started.
What this means for you
If you vote in Texas, your mailbox is about to get heavier. If you watch the Senate map, a red-state rescue mission is the tell that Republicans are scared of a preacher-legislator with a fundraising lead.
Bottom line: the first Musk checks are small next to what he can spend. They are not small as a signal. Paxton is now a national project.
