AP, Bill Barrow, Thursday 12:04 p.m. ET / Axios: China’s Xi Jinping, in opening remarks before talks with President Donald Trump, said two giant pandas — male Ping Ping and female Fu Shuang — “will come to their new home in Zoo Atlanta and meet with the American people” in “a few days.” He called it “a piece of good news.” Zoo Atlanta confirmed to Axios the pair are the same animals the zoo and the China Wildlife Conservation Association named in April. Beijing had reclaimed Atlanta’s last four pandas in 2024. An April name is not Thursday’s timing. A loan is not a treaty.
The Hill / Deseret: Xi also invited 100,000 young American students to study in China over the next five years. An invitation is not a visa count we have on this page. UPI, 2:42 p.m.: after the bilateral, Xi left the White House about 1:30 p.m. ET. Trump, asked how it went: “Great meeting, thank you.” Then he walked back inside. Neither leader gave a readout of what was settled. Midday already filed the foyer and Jan. 10. We will not reprint that as first-day news, and we will not invent a rare-earth close or a Taiwan line that has not posted.
