Then, he said, they will be ready to negotiate. A condition is not a cease-fire. “The goal of our military operations is not to close the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, but rather to ensure freedom of navigation through it for everyone, including Yemen.” A slogan is not a count.
Mahdi al-Mashat, president of the Houthis’ Supreme Political Council, said in a Sunday speech marking the 2014 takeover of Sanaa: “We have not closed the door to peace.” An anniversary line is not a deal. If you ship, a quote that U.S. vessels are not the target is not insurance. If you needed this morning’s intercept, it still happened. If you needed Sunday’s unused sentence, it is Saudi-only, they say, until a blockade they name is lifted.
Bottom line: Not targeting the U.S., they say. Still targeting Saudi, they say. Not a closed strait and not an open one.
