Associated Press, Cairo, Sept. 23, Samy Magdy: people familiar with the offensive told AP that Iranian Revolutionary Guard advisers were in the field helping direct the battle — Iran’s most direct intervention for the Houthis since Yemen’s civil war erupted in 2014. AP spoke to 10 officials and soldiers: a senior Houthi official, two regional officials, a top Yemeni military commander, and a member of Yemen’s presidential council, among others, on condition of anonymity. Iran’s U.N. mission did not respond to requests for comment. Unanswered is not a denial we can count, and it is not a confirmation.
The senior Houthi official told AP the advisers had previously stayed on strategic planning and were not in the field. In the latest escalation they were “present at all levels,” including planning tactical maneuvers and working with front-line commanders. Analyst Mzahem Alsaloum: a July flight from Tehran that later landed brought more Guard advisers, who joined Guard and Hezbollah advisers already based in Yemen; they also analyzed communications and satellite intelligence the Houthis lacked. AP’s reconstruction of the unused how: a 115-kilometer (75-mile) assault in less than 48 hours. Sept. 9: south toward Mokha through a narrow mountain valley. Afternoon: mountain road and a nearby base seized, supply lines cut. Lt. Gen. Tariq Saleh fled to Saudi Arabia. About 6 p.m.: retreat orders; fighters streaming into Mokha sparked a panic, two National Resistance fighters said. Resident Issa Gubwani: they left us to face our fate. The Houthi official: when rebels rolled in early Sept. 10, “the city was empty.” National Resistance spokesman Maj. Gen. Sadiq Dwaid: 130 ballistic missiles and 145 suicide drones over a month; about 30,000 National Resistance fighters stretched 170 kilometers against what he estimated were 75,000 Houthis. The National Resistance said it lost 500 fighters; AP could not independently confirm that. We will not invent a Houthi loss.
