The train photo got a press release.
Steve Witkoff said Monday on X that the Moscow-then-Kyiv weekend produced “substantive progress,” including “movement on scheduling additional trilateral talks.” The trip, he said, was on Donald Trump’s orders. Jared Kushner sat in. So did people from the NSC, State, and Treasury. “President Trump is working hard to stop the killing and work towards a lasting and durable peace.”
Volodymyr Zelenskyy: Ukraine is preparing “next steps” after three rounds in Kyiv, with the E3 — Britain, France, Germany — in the third. He also sat one-on-one with the envoys after. The list he keeps naming: air defense, tech, a winter package. “The most important thing is to continue working actively and jointly so that diplomacy can continue.”
Dmitry Peskov, Monday: Moscow does not rule out resuming the trilateral format. Then the brake: “It is still too early to discuss the venue and exact dates.” That is the Kremlin’s favorite tense.
What did not move: a ceasefire on the whole front. Putin still wants the rest of Donetsk and Luhansk before a line. Kyiv still says no. Ryazan burned the same Sunday the envoys were in the room. A 72-hour mute on two capitals is not a pause on refineries.
What this means for you
If you wanted a breakthrough by the first New York session after Labor Day, you got a scheduling clause. If you trade energy, LNG for a Ukrainian winter is still a bid. If you only read one word, it is scheduling — which is not signed.
Bottom line: progress, says Witkoff. Not ruled out, says Peskov. No city. No date. No peace.
