Four clocks sat on the same desk. Only one is allowed to say “close.”
1:11 p.m. ET was a live cash tape. We typed Dow 52,102.84. That number is now history. It is not the official session. Traders still had two hours and change to change their minds. They did: 52,064.10.
4:00 p.m. ET is the cash close for the NYSE and Nasdaq session. Yahoo’s 4 p.m. print is the one we file as the close. Fourth down day. That is the grade. Not 11:35. Not 1:11.
After the bell, oil and Bitcoin keep trading. Brent $108.93 at 7:03 p.m. is a futures last, not the Dow, not an ICE “official settle” we will invent. We timestamp it. We do not call it the stock close.
Friday, 8:30 ET is CPI — what consumers paid in August. PPI this morning was what producers got. FOMC 15–16 is 12 people. CME odds are a futures market, not the statement.
A $5,000 Fox interview is none of those clocks.
What this means for you
If you screenshotted 52,103 at lunch, you screenshotted a draft. If you needed inflation, you already have wholesale; wait until Friday for the receipt. If you needed the Fed, wait until next week.
Bottom line: 1:11 was the tape. 4:00 is the close. 8:30 Friday is CPI.
