Labor Day is not on the Constitution. Campaigns treat it like it is.
November 3, 2026 is Election Day. Sixty days before that is roughly September 4 β which is why North Carolina started mailing Friday and why Trumpβs March order wanted states to dump voter files into a Postal Service portal by that window. The holiday Monday is the cultural gun: offices close, the House sent members home early, and the last two months of ads begin in earnest.
Three words you will hear until November
Generic ballot: βIf the election were today, would you vote Democrat or Republican for Congress?β No names. A 3-to-8 point Democratic lead in most September surveys is the weather, not a seat count. House math still happens in districts. Senate math still happens in states Trump won.
Toss-up: a race a shop like Cook will not assign. This cycle the Senate list has included Alaska, Iowa, Maine, Ohio, Texas, and Michigan. Democrats need a net four to take the chamber. The House GOP majority is a handful of seats. Sixteen of 21 House toss-ups are Republican-held. That is why maps matter.
Early vote / mail: ballots already moving. A court fight over USPS envelopes and a federal portal is not a civics footnote if your county has to reprint. Talwani blocked the rule. Nichols is being asked to let it run. Mail early. Track the barcode.
What this means for you
If you vote, the picnic is when you request the ballot, not when you decide. If you watch markets, a chamber flip is subpoenas and a wall in front of the last two Trump years. If you only read polls, read enthusiasm and who is already holding a ballot.
Bottom line: Labor Day starts the clock you can feel. November 3 ends it. Everything in between is turnout and the mailbox.
