Nespelem can start counting school days.
The Kaiser Canyon Fire was 99% contained as of September 2, after 138,293 acres, according to the national wildfire reporting system. That is the Colville country fire that sent kids into the year with nothing on the desk. Wahluke had the Railroad Fire โ July 22, about ten homes, 8,200 acres near Mattawa and Beverly.
We just told you Ephrata filled the supply boxes. This is the fire story those boxes were answering. Containment is the line firefighters have around the edge. 99% means the last sliver can still spot, but the run is over.
The other fire still on our board
Ross in Palo Pinto and Jack counties, Texas, is still about 90,400 acres, 44% contained as of Saturday. Different fuel, different week. Do not mix the maps.
Harlow, the Wahluke superintendent, said the silver lining was people showing up with water and paper towels while displaced families slept in district spaces. That sentence and a 99% line can live in the same Sunday.
What this means for you
If you have people on the reservation or in Mattawa, the fire is no longer the lead. The rebuild is. If you send money or supplies, ask the district what is left, not what Twitter is selling. If you live in Texas under Ross smoke, your number is still 44.
Bottom line: 138,293 acres, 99% in. The school year started. That is the good version of a fire story.
